Introducing BIOVIA: Expanding 3DEXPERIENCE to the Virtual Biosphere

Five years ago, we blogged about a project called BioIntelligence that was just starting up. At that time, we had a dream:

“Imagine a day when Life Science innovations are created in 3D virtual labs.”

That dream is about to become real. Today, we’re introducing a new Dassault Systemes brand: BIOVIA, which combines our efforts in the BioIntelligence Project, collaborative 3DEXPERIENCE  technologies, and leading life and material sciences applications from the recent acquisition of Accelrys. For some time, our mission has been to provide businesses & people with 3DEXPERIENCE universes to imagine sustainable innovations capable of harmonizing Product, Nature and Life.

Product, Nature and Life

For more than 30 years, we have been helping our customers develop their products virtually. In 2012, we expanded 3DEXPERIENCE to the virtual planet (nature) with GEOVIA, which includes Gemcom Software, Archivideo and other applications. However, a part has been missing: the ability to virtualize and simulate living cells, biology, biochemistry; in other words, life!

Today with BIOVIA, the picture is now complete. From discovering raw materials to delivering finished products, manufacturing companies will now be able to predict and measure impacts of their products on the environment and people, while maximizing their business processes to create true sustainable innovations.

While BIOVIA is just starting as out as a brand, the contribution of 3DEXPERIENCE to Life Sciences has a long track record, as demonstrated the Living Heart
project unveiled earlier this week–just one of many projects in this field.

The BioIntelligence Project

Imagine a day when Life Science virtual labs’ 3D modeling and scientific simulation look like this:

I’m not sure how far away we are from this, but the BioIntelligence project puts us one step closer by providing an online collaborative platform for biological research.

According to a recent article on EUmonitor.net,

Thanks to BioIntelligence, Dassault Systèmes, SoBioS and their partners will remove several technological obstacles in order to devise a way of representing biological knowledge that is compatible with the BioPLM approach and to develop tools for systemic modelling and simulation of biological data. Other bioinformatic software developers will benefit from access to the open, integrated BioPLM software platform which will be created as a result of the programme so that they can use it to integrate their proprietary applications.

The EUmonitor.net article quotes EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes who says,

The systemic modelling and simulation tools in this particularly innovative programme will substantially improve the efficiency of biological research. BioIntelligence, and the BioPLM platform that will be developed by it, are entirely consistent with two key objectives in European research . . .

Three decades after 3D CAD/CAM software was first employed in the Aerospace industry, is Life Sciences the last frontier for PLM?
